How to Get Rid of Stretch Marks

By Joanna | Mar 30, 2009

stretch marksAlmost every woman worries about them. Yes those ugly things around your thighs, stomach, breasts and many women even have them on their arms.
Stretch marks happen when the skin is stretched enough that it tears and breaks down. Those marks that are left are similar to scars. Stretch marks are commonplace in everyone, but they are most often found in women. Women, that have gained weight quickly, especially during pregnancy are probably the most common of stretch mark victims.

Stretch mark scars usually first appear red or purple and over time may fade to white or appear as scar matures. They can even be present on the chest, arms and legs of obese people.
Both heredity and ethnicity play a key role in one’s susceptibility to stretch marks. Some people may be predisposed to having them, basically if your mom had them, you will too.

A way to get rid of stretch marks involves two types of light sources have been used to improve the appearance of stretch marks. The first is a way designed to re-pigment the skin. This therapy is called narrow band UVB primarily used to re-pigment the skin in patients with Vitiligo. Some studies indicate that NB-UVB can help reduce the appearance of stretch marks. The second option is to use a fractional laser such as the Fraxel. Multiple treatments may be needed to minimize the appearance of the stretch mark scar in terms of tone and texture.

Preventing stretch marks is difficult, but there are three cheaper things you can do to help hide their appearance or even reduce them to the point where they aren’t very noticeable. Below are 3 top things you can do to help do away with stretch marks:

1. Drink Water: Drinking water keeps your entire body and your skin well hydrated. This keeps your skin supple and less prone to the tears associated with stretch marks.
2. Moisturize: Water works to help your skin from the inside moisturizers help keep your skin hydrated from the outside. Rub lotion on, especially an ultra rich moisturizing cream like Body Solution, initially created to combat cellulite body solution works very well for stretch marks, currently they are offering a free trial-click here to get it so you can sample it. It also works for post pregnant stretch marks.
3. Exercise: Doing something everyday for exercising works well, we really like performing cardio which helps you sweat and in turn helps the skin. However, we found something that really targets the abdominal area which is where most of the stretch marks are anyway. It’s called the Ab Coaster. Click here for more information on that. Yeah, its a new toy, but if it helps you get excited then good. Listen, you just need some motivation…oh yeah and some cream. lol

The bottom line is, that while laser surgery may help you, there is also a risk that will have the opposite effect. Just stick to drinking water, moisturizing and exercising.

What You Need To Know About an Episiotomy

By Joanna | Oct 3, 2008

An episiotomy is an incision that’s made to provide more room for the baby to exit the birth canal. Not everyone needs one, but most women do so that they will not tear during the actual childbirth.

The most common episiotomy incision is made from the end of the vagina back toward the rectum. It is stitched up after the birth is complete. There is usually some lingering pain from this incision for several days, especially during a bowel movement.

However, most of these cuts heal up very quickly and there is usually no problem with infection. It leaves no lasting problems with muscle tone, either, so it’s actually a good choice for most women.

Why Your Post Pregnancy Health is Just as Important as Your New Baby’s

By Joanna | Oct 2, 2008

You want your baby to be healthy. That’s why you take him or her for things like checkups and vaccinations. If there’s a problem, you follow the orders that the doctor gave you and give the right medications.

What you might not realize, though, is that you have to keep yourself really healthy as well. You can’t take care of your baby in the best way possible if you’re sick, so you have to pay attention to how you’re doing and whether you’re keeping up with your health.

Moderate exercise, enough sleep, and eating right are all important, and they are some of the best and the easiest ways to protect yourself from harm so you can protect your baby, too.

What You Can Expect From Post Pregnancy Weight Loss

By Joanna | Oct 1, 2008

Losing the weight that you gained while you were pregnant is a very personal and unique thing for each woman. Every woman and every pregnancy is different. Of course, the biggest factor is how much weight was actually gained during the pregnancy. There will be a certain amount of this that you will automatically lose during the first few weeks after you give birth due to the weight of the baby and all the amniotic fluids. More weight will drop off the first couple of weeks while the uterus shrinks back down to its normal size.

After that it depends on your eating and exercise habits. If you are breastfeeding, it is good to have a little extra weight to help you keep your energy up.

Much of how fast the weight will come off will be based on genetics and there is not much you can do about that. If you began your pregnancy fairly healthy and not over weight and you adopt a reasonable, nutritious diet and exercise program you could be back to your pre-pregnancy weight within a few months.

Need to Smile? Check Out These Quotes About New Mothers

By Joanna | Sep 30, 2008

Did you know that, “as a mother, you will always be your child’s favorite toy?” Vicki Lansky thinks so, and she’s just one of the many people who have quotes about babies and children.

“They grow so quickly, but what most parents fail to realize is that they are changing and growing in many ways, right along with their children. The children see it, though, and it becomes important to them.”

The quotes that are found about mothers and children are important. They can make you laugh, cry, and think very deeply about your priorities and what’s really important on this planet. These kinds of quotes can be found in books, too, but you can read them for free on the Internet and forward them to your friends.

What Your Diet Should Consist of While Breastfeeding

By Joanna | Sep 29, 2008

If you decide to breastfeed your baby, you need to make sure that you’re getting enough nutrients yourself. One of the best ways to do that is not to listen to all the hype about the foods you should be eating. Instead, eat sensible balanced meals, and consume around 500 calories a day more than you normally would.

Also, try to avoid alcohol and caffeine. If you use them, do so after you breastfeed, not before, and wait at least three hours after consumption before you breast feed again.

Fruits and vegetables and whole grains are good choices for breastfeeding mothers, and so are things like fish that contain essential fatty acids that will help you stay healthy and help your baby grow.

Tell Tale Signs of Postpartum Depression

By Joanna | Sep 28, 2008

The tell tale signs of postpartum depression sometimes get overlooked and passed off as just baby blues when nothing could be further from the truth. The symptoms of the baby blues include mood swings, anxiety, sadness, irritability, crying, lack of concentration and problems sleeping but they are not severe and they do not last longer than a few weeks at the most. Many of these same symptoms are the same with postpartum depression but they are much more severe and usually do not go away without some kind of treatment.

Postpartum depression symptoms will be much more intense and will eventually make it difficult to care for your child and handle normal everyday duties. In addition to these symptoms, there will also be loss of appetite and overwhelming fatigue.

Things that would normally make you happy like sex or hobbies you used to love, hold no interest to a person suffering from postpartum depression. There will be difficulty bonding with and taking care of the baby or children and there will be withdrawal from friends and family. Treatment should be sought especially if there are thoughts of harming yourself or your children.

Health Tips For New Moms

By Joanna | Sep 27, 2008

Many new moms that may have felt that they were pretty healthy before they had their babies can feel as if they have spent their whole lives doing the wrong things instead of the right ones. A new mom has many new things going on in their bodies in addition to a new schedule to get used including less sleep than they were used to and not having as much time for themselves that they had before they became a mom.

Counter acting some of these new factors is possible though if you work at it. Although time always seems to be a problem for a new mom, a small amount of time each day can make a huge difference in how a new mom feels.

It is extremely important to make sure that new moms are drinking plenty of water. Being dehydrated will make you feel more tired and contribute to your overall health. Also, try to eat as nutritiously as possible and avoid fast foods and processed foods as much as possible. Do not skip exercise. As little as ten minutes three times a day is enough to get the benefits of thirty minutes of exercise a day.

Keep Infection Away!

By Joanna | Sep 26, 2008

A lot of women who are about to have a baby don’t realize how much they risk infection for themselves and their unborn child just by doing simple, normal things that they do all the time.

One of these includes changing the cat litter. It can contain harmful parasites and shouldn’t be changed by pregnant women, who also should not spend time playing with rodents such as hamsters and mice.

It’s also very important that pregnant women wash their hands after they touch raw meat or vegetables, stay away from other people who have infections, and keep themselves clean, especially their hands, so that they don’t transmit germs that they might pick up into their bodies and into their unborn child’s body.

Is It Possible To Get Your Pre-Pregnancy Figure Back?

By Joanna | Sep 25, 2008

Yes! It is possible to get your pre-pregnancy figure back! The most important thing that you want to realize, though, is that it takes time.

It took nine months to put the weight on, and will usually take between eight and twelve months to remove that weight, if you do it the safe and careful way. Things like fad diets and starving yourself really should be avoided.

You can get exercise, too, but you have to do it safely. Only go back to exercising when your doctor says it’s ok, and ease into the routine that you’ve set for yourself. You don’t want to lose weight too fast, especially if you’re breastfeeding. With exercise, a good diet, and some patience, you can get back to your pre-pregnancy figure.
